5 Ways to Wear Plaid

As the temperature drops and the leaves change colour my affinity for plaid increases. The plaid mainia grows until it culminates with the Christmas Holidays. I am not sure why, since we have many months of winter that follows but I am just not as into plaids after December 25th.

Until then I will get my fill with these 5 ways to wear plaid.

5 ways to wear plaid

1. Plaid coats (here/here)

I am all about a bold topper. I think they break through the sea of black winter coats and make a bold statement. I did a plaid coat round up for this year (find it here), but colours range from black and red buffalo plaids to bold blues and soft greys.

What I love about a plaid coat is that you can keep everything simple and neutral underneath and let the coat speak for itself. It is an easy way to be chic without trying too hard.

2. Plaid Scarf (here/here)

If you don’t have one yet you need to get a plaid scarf. It is an easy way to incorporate plaid into your wardrobe without going overboard or pushing the envelope too far. If you are someone who hasn’t been able to break out of black coat mode this is a great way to spice it up. In fact get one in a few different colours of plaid. One that is great for the holidays like this red plaid and one that will take you through the rest of the year like this blue or grey plaid.

3. Plaid trousers (here/here)

Sure a tartan pleated skirt might be more traditional but I prefer plaid trousers. They feel a bit quirky and modern but if you keep everything neutral except the pants they can make quite the statement. While a wide leg plaid pant could work for some and be quite dramatic, for the most part it is going to come off as a bit retro in all the wrong ways. Stick with a slim cropped pant, pair it with a black sweater and black pumps and you are set.

4. Plaid Pumps (here/here/here)

With any trend the least garish way to participate (even more subtle than a scarf) is a pair of pumps. It is the best way to ease your way into getting comfortable with print. Or even better mixing prints. If you have something subtle like a small houndstooth or pinstripe pairing them with a plaid pump with up your style game 1000%.

5. Plaid shirt (here/here/here/here)

So many of us these days have a plaid flannel shirt in our arsenal, whether it is for your off duty style or to add some edge to something more feminine a plaid shirt is a must. But don’t just stick with the traditional button down. These plaid structured t-shirts are great for the office.
