How I get Kate Beckett Hair

kate beckett hair, loose waves, how to create loose waves, how to get hair like kate beckett, castleSo I have to admit I have a bit of a Castle obsession. To the point that my two year old points at the TV when it is on and can say Castle. It is funny because we (and by we I mean my & my husband not me and my 2 year old) didn’t really pick up on this show until fall 2013 so we had 5 seasons to catch up on to get up to speed for the current season.

For those of you familiar with the show will know that the Castle’s leading lady is Kate Beckett, the NYPD detective that inspires his Nikki Heat series of books. You will also know that the character (played by Canada’s own Stana Katic) has had quite the hair evolution over the series. Personally I am not too fond of her hair from the first two seasons as it was quite short and then obvious that she was growing out a short cut.

Season 3 and 4 are my favourites hair wise as somewhere between season 4 and 5 Beckett got hair extensions as her hair seemed to get REALLY long REALLY fast.

Regardless Kate Beckett’s hair is often styled with these perfectly loose wave curls that I thought I would share how to recreate.

Personally I don’t like to do this on air dried hair as the curl is loose and with a blow out first you are giving the look a stronger foundation. My hair is actually naturally wavy but my waves NEVER end up looking like the end result here.

As you can see I have mid length hair (about to the top tip of my armpit) so this is going to be about Kate Becket season 3-ish.

So first thing is the point the clip away from you. I don’t really use the clip so I want it out of the way while I am twirling the hair around the barrel.

The second thing is is to wrap the hair around the barrel AWAY from you so when you hold a piece of hair out wrap it out across the front of the barrel to the far side of the curling iron then continue to wrap the hair. I wrap it up the barrel.

Because my hair is layered it depends on whether we are talking the shortest or the longest layers. Some of the shortest layers are more like 1.5 times around the barrel.

Do not clip the ends and wrap. This technique will not get you these waves. Instead hold onto the end piece of the hair like you see above, wrap the 2 or so times and just hold the hair tightly.

Now on some of the under pieces I will cheat and use the clip and just roll the hair up because I find that it is more awkward to hold the hair. And I don’t always fully curl the back, but get the top few layers to continue the look through the back.

I find that this look will hold for a few days and still look good (especially day 2 where the curls will be nice and loose). I don’t traditionally use alot of product to style my hair. I just use Bumble & Bumble prep to start and then either the Bumble & Bumble straitening cream or Kevin Murphy Full again.
