Five things I have learned from Fashion Bloggers

I have recently started posting some personal style posts. I find that since I’m trying to revive my style after being pregnant, I might as well document it as I go and force myself to get out of my pjs once in a while.

I have been closely following a handful of my now favourite personal style bloggers and I have started to pick up some of the secrets of their success. These are the ways in which you can make your outfits infinitely more interesting.

personal style blog1. Layering

Many of my favourite outfits, the ones I keep stalking over and over and I try to recreate with my wardrobe are ones that involve layering. Layering vests over jackets, layering button down shirts, layering sweaters and scarves.

What I like about the layering these style bloggers excel at is that it is practical for Canadian weather, summer and winter alike.

It is also much harder than you initally think. It’s not just layering a tee under a sweater. It’s about having the right weights of fabrics so that the layering doesn’t end up looking to bulky and weighted.

2. Mixing Prints

An extension of layering is to mix prints and mix them in an unexpected way. Pairing nautical stripes and floral or plaid with leopard.

The best way to pull this off is to break up the different patterns with a healthy dose of solid so no one print overwhelms or clashes with the other.

It also helps if one of the prints is bold, that any other prints mixed with this bold print are simpler, or more classic.

3. Accessorize

The age-old adage is to take one accessory or rather item of jewellery off before you leave the house so as to not over do it. If that is the case I wonder how much some of these style bloggers were originally wearing!

Even if you aren’t into having an arm party or layering multiple bold necklaces, you can still learn that accessories take an outfit to the next level. And can add a touch of sophistication to a simple or casual outfit.

Add a few bangles, a chunky necklace and trust me people will be asking if you have a hot date.

4. Roll up your sleeves

It’s the secret to layering and showing just a bit of what is underneath. Roll your shirt sleeves and pop your collar. It adds an element of effortless cool that without it could leave an outfit looking stuffy.

5. Your outfit doesn’t end with your clothes

Take a look at the really successful style bloggers and you will notice one thing. Sure their outfits are awesome, they are rockin cool shoes and accessorized just right. But their hair and nails and makeup are all done too.

Remember that your outfit will look infinitely more awesome if you look great as well as your clothes. Not only because you have taken the extra time to look good, but because you have taken the extra time to give yourself a confidence boost.
